Episode 518: How to speak to people

We open in a hospital room where Sam Evans is in bed, wearing dark glasses. This would tell a first time viewer that Sam is blind, and also that he’s reckless about his glasses.

Sam is begging his daughter Maggie to bring her friend Vicki around so he can tell her about a dream he just had. Vicki shows up and invites Sam to tell her the dream. This leads to a dramatic musical sting and a cut to the opening title. The first time viewer, still worried that Sam might nod off and break his glasses, will be unlikely to see why Vicki’s willingness to listen to Sam’s dream should be a concerning development.

Sam starts to describe his dream. A knock on the door interrupts him. It is Timothy Eliot Stokes. Stokes orders Vicki out of the room. Stokes is wearing a suit, not a white coat, and is addressed as “Professor.” So it should be clear to the first-time viewer that he is not a medical doctor, has no authority in the hospital, and is not particularly close to Vicki, Maggie, or Sam. The women resist his commands, but when it becomes clear he won’t back down they humor him.

In the corridor outside Sam’s room, Vicki tells Stokes “I hope you have some explanation.” He replies “The situation required drastic action.” “Is that all you have to say?” “No, I might add you should be grateful to me.” Thus the first-time viewer learns that Stokes does not feel obligated to be polite to young, pretty women.

Stokes tells Vicki that “Your recent experience in the past has taught you some rather frightening things about witchcraft.” Vicki agrees with this statement. Maggie turns away and looks out into space, wondering what the heck these lunatics are talking about. At last the first-time viewer has an on-screen representative.

Stokes describes a “Dream Curse,” in which a series of people all have the same nightmare. Each dreamer is compelled to tell the nightmare to a particular person who appeared in it. That person then has the nightmare, featuring a third person, and awakens with the same compulsion to tell the nightmare to that person, keeping the cycle going. Vicki declares that she doesn’t know what Stokes is talking about, but Maggie seems to. Vicki grudgingly agrees not to go into Sam’s room, but refuses to leave the corridor.

Returning viewers know that Maggie was the first to have the nightmare. It will also stretch their credulity that Vicki hasn’t heard about it. Maggie is one of Vicki’s dearest friends, and the nightmare was a terrifying experience that weighed on her for quite some time. The person Maggie passed the nightmare to was Vicki’s boyfriend Peter, who prefers to be called Jeff. Not only has neither Maggie nor Peter/ Jeff told Vicki about the nightmare, neither has any of the three people who have already had the nightmare and who live with her in the great house of Collinwood. These are heiress Carolyn, whom Vicki has addressed as “my best friend”; strange and troubled boy David, who is Vicki’s charge in her job as governess and who feels very close to her; and housekeeper Mrs Johnson, who habitually tells everyone everything she knows.

It will also be strange to those who have been watching the show that Stokes does not tell Vicki the key thing about the Dream Curse, that it is aimed at old world gentleman Barnabas Collins. Vicki is extremely fond of Barnabas; Stokes knows this, because in #509, he told her that he was doing battle with a witch whose goal was to kill Barnabas, and she was most eager to help him. If he told her that by listening to Sam’s account of the dream she would be bringing Barnabas one step closer to death, surely he would have persuaded her to go home. But, as my wife Mrs Acilius pointed out while we were watching the episode, that would let Vicki back into the story. Stokes, like Barnabas and several other major characters, is working to keep Vicki from becoming relevant to any ongoing plot.

Stokes has to leave the hospital to attend to another matter. While Maggie was leading the way out of the hospital room, he looked out the window and saw a man looking in. The man is Adam, a very tall, phenomenally strong, peculiarly inarticulate fellow whom Stokes met at Sam and Maggie’s cottage a few days ago. Stokes is eager to get to know Adam. He lets himself into the cottage and waits there until Adam comes by. Adam is confused to find him there, but Stokes quickly persuades him to come home with him. Stokes promises to give him food and become his friend. The two of them are quite cheerful as they walk out the front door.

The camera repeatedly focuses on a stickpin Stokes dropped on the rug, suggesting that he will get in trouble for having let himself into the cottage without Maggie’s permission. That suggestion is clearer to the first-time viewer than to those who know what’s been happening. Stokes had been in the cottage with Sam not long before, and could easily claim to have dropped the stickpin on that occasion.

Back in the hospital corridor, Vicki hears Sam crying out in agony. She goes to his room. Maggie joins her there, and Sam starts describing the nightmare. Maggie recognizes it as the one that caused her such distress when she had it, and her eyes dart to Vicki. She tells Vicki she doesn’t have to stay. Vicki insists, and a look of panic starts to form on Maggie’s face. Sam doesn’t get far into the nightmare before he dies.

Returning viewers will remember that the luckless Willie Loomis was interrupted in his attempt to tell Carolyn the nightmare in #506, and that when she next went to sleep she could have only the part of the nightmare he had described. So we wonder if Vicki will have the same problem.

We may wonder about something else. Stokes, as an expert on witchcraft, has several times said that a Dream Curse is designed to “end with a death.” We may wonder if Sam’s death will end it before it gets to Barnabas.

That would represent a stinging defeat for the witch. Sam was once a fairly important character, but long ago receded to the margins of the show. He made his debut in #5, and has been played by David Ford since #35. Originally he was a tormented alcoholic, driven to drink by his part in the injustice done long ago to dashing action hero Burke Devlin. Burke’s storyline fizzled out completely in #201, and since then Sam has made only intermittent appearances, mostly as support for Maggie, who is herself usually a secondary character. To launch an attack on the show’s breakout star and hit a tertiary player would be quite embarrassing to any villain. Maybe the witch’s next plan will wind up falling on Bob the Bartender, and the one after that will hit one of the sheriff’s feeble-minded deputies.

Kathryn Leigh Scott tells some stories about Sam’s death scene that do not fit with what is on the tape. In her 1986 book My Scrapbook Memories of Dark Shadows, she writes about the teleprompter falling over and making a loud noise and Ford shouting “Where is it!?” In appearances at Dark Shadows conventions, she has said that the lines Ford improvised to replace the ones he couldn’t read ran over time, and that in her desperation to get to the next break she pushed a pillow on his face and nearly smothered him while saying “Don’t die, Pop!” In his post on Dark Shadows Every Day, Danny Horn says that Miss Scott’s “anecdote was entirely made up. None of that happened.”

I reserve judgment. Maybe the episode we have is a second take. It runs unusually smoothly up to Sam’s death scene, as if the cast had had more practice with its parts than usual. We know that, in spite of all the spectacular bloopers and other production errors they left in, they did sometimes start over, and the incidents Miss Scott described might well have been enough to warrant that.

Episode 517: Tell me your dream

Wiggèd witch Cassandra shakes off an attempt to burn her and finds out that Sam Evans, an artist whom she blinded a little while ago, is in the hospital with a severe head injury. Sam is on the critical list.

Cassandra has cast an elaborate spell that takes the form of a series of nightmares one person after another has. Sage Timothy Eliot Stokes managed to stop the dream curse a while ago, but Cassandra is determined to restart it. Sam must be the next person to have the dream, so she goes to his hospital room and puts a powder in his drinking water that does the trick.

We see Sam’s dream, as we saw the dream when each of the previous nine people had it. The dream is an opportunity for the actors to emote as fiercely as they want, and most of them seem at least a little bit silly as they go through the exercise. Today, David Ford is the most ridiculous yet. He has to scream several times, and we find that screaming was not one of his strengths as an actor. In fact, every time he did it Mrs Acilius and I laughed out loud. The other person in his dream, the well-meaning Vicki, is played by Alexandra Moltke Isles. Mrs Isles has a ghostly quality that makes her very effective as a mysterious figure in a nightmare. Next to her, Ford seems to be some random guy in a bathrobe who just wandered onto the set.

Sam wakes up from his dream and begs his daughter Maggie to get her friend Vicki to come over. Only by telling her about it can he be relieved of the agony that comes to those who have had the dream. Regular viewers know that if he does this, Vicki will have the dream. In a soliloquy, Cassandra tells us that Vicki will pass the dream to recovering vampire Barnabas. Her purpose in setting the curse was to turn Barnabas back into an active vampire; this will therefore be the last step to her success.

Stokes knows how the curse works and knows that Barnabas will die if the dream gets back to him. He does not know that Barnabas was a vampire, much less that Cassandra wants him to revert to vampirism. Maggie was the first to have the dream and knows that Stokes is an expert on it. She does not know that it is designed to kill someone at its culmination. So she sends for both Vicki and Stokes. At the end of the episode, Vicki is at Sam’s bedside, inviting him to tell her the dream; Stokes is still on his way.

Cassandra chose Maggie to be the first to have the dream because she resembles Barnabas’ lost love, gracious lady Josette. They look so much alike that they are the same actress. She does not tell us why she chose Vicki to be the last, but Vicki had extensive contact with Josette’s ghost in the first 39 weeks of the show, and from November 1967 to March 1968 traveled back in time and got to know Josette as a living being. When Josette was alive, Cassandra was known as Angelique. She was a lady’s maid in Josette’s family’s home, and secretly hated the young mistress. Barnabas had an affair with Angelique until he realized he could marry Josette, when he discarded the servant and pursued the mistress. Eventually, Barnabas’ attachment to Josette led the enraged Angelique to turn him into a vampire. So it is logical that Angelique/ Cassandra uses the two women closest to Josette as the first and last instruments in her campaign to revamp Barnabas. It does make it all the more ironic that Stokes lumped strange and troubled boy David, who for the first months of the show was more involved with Josette’s ghost than anyone else, among the “comparative strangers” who have the dream when Barnabas is in relatively little danger.

Episode 235: What’s true, Maggie?

Maggie Evans, The Nicest Girl in Town, is in the hospital with a mysterious ailment that may kill her at any moment. Her father Sam and her boyfriend Joe visit her there. Sam’s alcoholism and its effect on Maggie was a story element for the first 40 weeks of the show. Lately Sam has somehow become a social drinker, and early in today’s episode he shows zero interest when offered a drink. Still, when Maggie asks from her sickbed that he abstain from alcohol, he says “I’ll go on the wagon. I promise this time!”

The doctor tells Sam and Joe they have to leave the room to let Maggie sleep. The two of them stay in the hospital, sitting in a lounge, where Sam reminisces that he sat on that very spot waiting for Maggie to be born. Joe tries to reassure Sam that everything will be all right, but can’t conceal his own fears. As Sam, David Ford usually underacts. When he has gone big before, as he did especially in his first weeks on the show, he has been very effective. In his scene with Joe in the hospital lounge, he overacts for the first time, and it is pretty bad.

This utterly typical soap opera material occurs in the context of a story no other daytime serial has told before, the attacks of a vampire. It is the undead Barnabas Collins who is the cause of Maggie’s illness. Most of the characters we see today think Dark Shadows is still a conventional soap of the period, and are at a loss to explain what is going on with Maggie.

Twice, the doctor seems to be forming a suspicion that might carry him in the direction of the truth. Before the ambulance comes to take Maggie from her house to the hospital, he says he has an idea that’s “too wild.” Well-meaning governess Vicki, who the other day suggested that Maggie’s condition and other events that the audience knows to have been caused by the vampire might have a supernatural origin, perks up and asks him to explain.

Vicki thinks the doctor might have something interesting to say.

The doctor then speculates that the wounds on Maggie’s neck may have been produced by an animal. Vicki allows that she heard some dogs outside the window before Maggie sustained her latest injury.

At the hospital, the doctor instructs his nurse that she is under no circumstances to open the window to Maggie’s room, and under no circumstances to leave her alone for an instant. She asks him to explain why he is giving these instructions, and he declines to do so. Evidently he can’t come up with a scientific-sounding explanation.

Maggie wakes up and pleads with the nurse to open the window. Within seconds, she gives in. Shortly afterward, Maggie codes. The nurse dashes out of the room, closing the door behind her to ensure Maggie will be out of view. When the doctor comes, they go into the room together. Maggie is gone, the window is wide open, and a hound is howling nearby.

In the early part of the episode, when Maggie was still at home, the doctor himself had closed the door to her bedroom when she was alone in there. That was a bit less exasperating than it is when the nurse closes the door. First, the audience knows nothing is going to happen to Maggie in the first ten minutes of the episode, but in the last three she is in extreme danger. Second, while the doctor has several times this week ordered Sam never to leave Maggie alone, we don’t hear him talk about that today until he gives the same order to the nurse. So when he closes Maggie’s door, it is insulting to the intelligence only of people who watch the show every day, and frankly how smart can anyone be who does that. But nursing is a most distinguished profession, and we should all object when a nurse is represented as a big dummy.

Episode 192: Can we stop being afraid?

Yesterday, the “Phoenix” story had its climax. Today is taken up with the denouement of that story. Throughout the thirteen weeks of this arc, there has been so much recapping and re-recapping that a denouement may not seem necessary, but this is a satisfying episode.

We open in the woods, where well-meaning governess Vicki and strange and troubled boy David are running from the flames engulfing an old fishing shack in which David’s mother, blonde fire witch Laura, has tried to lure him to a fiery death. Laura did not burn, but disappeared amid the flames.

Vicki holds David by the hand. He is no longer under the trance in which his mother held him while they were in the shack, but neither is he clear in his mind. When Vicki tells him she is taking him home, he looks at the fire and exclaims “That is my home!”

Dashing action hero Burke comes tumbling out of the woods. Vicki tells him what happened. He wants to rescue Laura from the fire, and leaves Vicki no choice but to explain that she saw Laura simply vanish. David is standing by them when they have this conversation, but evidently does not hear it. He is quiet for a while, then looks at Burke and asks if what he sees burning is the fishing shack.

Back home in the great house of Collinwood, Vicki tucks David into bed. He asks her if the fishing shack burned. She says yes. He is dismayed- he had a lot of fishing equipment there. He then asks if his mother left. Vicki says yes. He talks about the situation with her for a while, finally saying that he might visit her sometime. Vicki tells him that he should know that his mother loves him.

Downstairs in the drawing room, Vicki tells Burke that David doesn’t seem to remember anything of his terrible experience. She hopes he never will.

David’s father, high-born ne’er-do-well Roger, comes home. He reacts to the sight of Burke with distaste, indicating that the hiatus in their feud while they were working together to protect David is now over. Roger is complaining that he was having a pleasant evening in town until he had to come home because of some foolish talk about a fire at Collinwood. Vicki asks Burke to leave the room so that she can talk to Roger privately.

Roger is thunderstruck by the news that Laura is no more. He is even more shocked to learn that Vicki had to struggle to keep David from joining Laura in the flames. “She wanted to kill him? She wanted him to burn?” “You saved him?” “What can I say?” For the whole of the series until the last few days, Roger has openly hated his son and wanted to be rid of him. Now that David has come so close to death, Roger has begun to understand what he has thrown away by refusing to love his son.

Roger goes up to David’s room. David wakes up. Roger says he didn’t mean to wake him. David is bright, cheerful, polite. He makes a comment about Roger’s grammar, then apologizes for correcting his elders. He asks Roger if he heard about the shack, and says he will miss his fishing gear. He mentions a particular pole that groundskeeper Matthew Morgan made for him a long time ago; David’s acquaintance with Matthew ended under circumstances scarcely less traumatic than what he went through in the fishing shack in yesterday’s episode, but his reference to Matthew is as chirpy and upbeat as is everything else he says. David keeps asking Roger why he came and what he wanted. Roger, who is supremely fluent when the conversation consists of sarcastic, belittling remarks, can barely complete a sentence. He can’t even maintain eye contact with David. He finally stumbles through something about how there are things that are hard to understand. It is a beautiful, terrible, wonderful little scene.

In a hospital room in Boston, reclusive matriarch Liz has emerged from the catatonic trance in which Laura trapped her five weeks ago. Liz’ daughter, flighty heiress Carolyn, is overjoyed at her mother’s apparently complete recovery.

Carolyn telephones Collinwood with the good news. Vicki tells her what happened in the fishing shack. It dawns on them that Liz emerged from her trance as the flames were surrounding Laura. They don’t know what we saw yesterday, that David began to break from the trance in which Laura held him when he heard the sound of Liz shouting in her hospital room almost 300 miles away. They do realize that Laura’s power was at the root of Liz’ troubles, even if they never find out that Liz was able to exercise some power of her own. Carolyn wonders if all the strange goings-on have really finished going on, if the residents of Collinwood are now free to live quiet, uneventful lives.

Disturbingly for fans of the show, they really are free, at least for the time being. Liz is antsy today when she asks if a stranger has gone through the basement of the house. Carolyn is at one with the audience in finding this question completely uninteresting, but Liz was obsessed with keeping people out of the basement in the early weeks of the show, and the unexplained reason for that obsession is the closest thing they have to an unresolved storyline. Roger and Burke’s mutual dislike also ties into some unanswered questions that no one who isn’t desperate for a cure to insomnia really wants to ask again. So it is not at all clear where the show is heading. They could just stop here, say “They all lived happily ever after,” and that would be fine. But they’ve sold ABC another 65 episodes, so some misfortunes have to turn up in the next couple of days.

Episode 191: Everything will be complete

We open in an old, abandoned fishing shack loaded with junk, much of it made of dry, brittle wood. The floor of the shack is on fire. Flames leap from the floor several feet up to the ceiling. Over the next half hour, none of the junk will catch fire, nor will the walls. During that period, strange and troubled boy David Collins and his mother, blonde fire witch Laura, will stand around in the shack, carrying on a conversation. David slowly recites the legend of the Phoenix. There are also several cuts away from the burning shack. We see well-meaning governess Vicki in the drawing room at the great house of Collinwood; we see reclusive matriarch Liz in her hospital room in Boston. Evidently it’s one of those leisurely shack fires that don’t demand your undivided attention.

In the pre-credits teaser, Laura calls David to come to her, deeper into the flames. He takes a few steps in her direction. After the credits, David is back where he started. This sets the amazingly dilatory tone that persists throughout the whole episode.

In the drawing room, Vicki is shouting at the ghost of Josette Collins, asking where David is. My wife, Mrs Acilius, says that on this viewing of the series she is starting to identify with the ghost of Josette. Josette must be getting pretty frustrated that after everything she and the other ghosts have done to try to explain the situation to them, the living still don’t get it. Vicki really ought to have thought of the fishing shack several days ago, when a ghost told her that there would be a deadly fire in a very small house by the sea, but it doesn’t dawn on her until some minutes into today’s episode, by which time a wooden shack would have burned to ashes.

Laura asks David to tell her the legend of the Phoenix. He announces the title: “The Legend of the Phoenix!” Then he looks at the teleprompter, intones a few more words, and looks at the teleprompter again. It is very unusual for David Henesy’s memory to fail him, and even more unusual for him to bellow his lines like some kid actor on a 1960’s TV show. Usually he’s letter-perfect and remarkably natural. But Diana Millay is also a good study, and she’s looking at the teleprompter today as well.

Maybe writer Malcolm Marmorstein didn’t get today’s script to the actors at the usual time. It’s easy to imagine that the producers might have kept sending Marmorstein back to do rewrites- this is the grand finale of the most ambitious storyline they’ve had, and it stinks to high heaven. Maybe by the time they realized they weren’t going to get a decent piece of writing out of Marmorstein, it was too late for the actors to learn their parts properly.

In a hospital room in Boston, flighty heiress Carolyn is sitting with her mother Liz. Liz has been in a catatonic state and off the show since #160, immobilized by Laura’s evil spell and Joan Bennett’s annual five week vacation. It’s the first hospital room we’ve seen on Dark Shadows, and it comes equipped with Ivor Francis, who would be one of the busiest and most distinguished character actors on American television in the 1970s. Francis plays the doctor who very patiently and calmly tells Carolyn that there isn’t any point in sitting with Liz tonight. Francis is always interesting to watch- you can tell that the doctor has a thousand interesting things on his mind, and are engrossed in his every word, expecting him to say one of them out loud. But of course he never does.

Vicki makes her way to the shack, where the fire hasn’t made the slightest progress. Maybe the real danger David is facing is asbestos exposure. Vicki tries the door and finds it locked. She stands at the window, which has no glass but is crossed with stout wooden beams, and shouts at David to come out. Laura urges him to finish telling the story of the Phoenix, Vicki urges him to stop telling the story and get out of the shack. Vicki can stick her hand into the shack, but can’t quite touch David.

Vicki realizes she can’t reach David

Laura looks up at Vicki and says that David can’t hear her. Vicki keeps talking, and Laura sounds as exasperated as we imagine Josette must be. After all the research she and her allies have done, hasn’t she figured out that this was what was going to happen?

Returning viewers share Laura’s exasperation, because we know that Vicki has indeed figured it out. She’s spent weeks warning all of her friends that exactly this scenario would play out. But suddenly today she has forgotten everything. It’s the ultimate Dumb Vicki moment, when the writers paint themselves into a corner and escape by making Vicki act like a moron. Marmorstein has to keep the shack burning and David in it from 4:00 to 4:30 PM Eastern time, and if that means Vicki has to develop some kind of amnesia, too bad for her.

Laura says that David, like her, will attain immortality if he burns in the fire. We know that is false.The ghost of David Radcliffe, a son whom she burned in a previous incarnation, spoke through David at a séance the other day and told us that he was separated from his mother in the fire and has been an unquiet spirit since. Laura may not know this, and may sincerely believe that David will share in her resurrection. But Vicki was at the séance. It’s a bit odd she doesn’t try to correct Laura on this point, since they have plenty of time for chit-chat while the flames burn in place.

In Boston, Liz wakes up. Evidently Laura’s impending immolation has broken the spell she cast on Liz. After some minutes of preliminaries, Liz starts shouting “David! Fire! David in fire!” Carolyn and the doctor try to calm her, but she keeps shouting. Almost 300 miles away at Collinwood, David can hear Liz’ voice.

After he hears Liz, David can hear Vicki as well. Evidently all of Laura’s spells are breaking. Laura keeps pleading with David to join her in the flames, Vicki keeps yelling at him to stay where he is. Two minutes before the end of the episode, a burning beam falls, and Laura looks terrified. She delivers her lines after this with the utmost intensity. In an Archives of Television interview, Diana Millay explained that the beam wasn’t supposed to fall, that she really was frightened, and that after all those weeks on the show she had developed a maternal feeling for David Henesy that nearly led her to break character and try to protect him at that moment. She uses those feelings to great advantage, selling the audience on the idea that this is Laura’s last chance to take David with her into the flames.

Finally Laura tells David it is too late. David looks back and forth between Laura in the flames and Vicki at the window. The flames consume Laura as she cries out “From these ashes, the Phoenix is reborn!” David is horrified as he watches his mother disappear in the blaze.

David pulls at the window in an attempt to escape. Vicki calls him to come out the door. He does, and she embraces him as he weeps.

The last couple of minutes of the episode work well enough to show us what we are supposed to be feeling. Mostly that is down to the emotions Millay and Henesy are able to project when they aren’t burdened with a lot of lines they got at the last minute and that don’t make much sense anyway. It also rests on the foundation of the only relationship that has been interesting every time we’ve seen it, the growing friendship between David and Vicki.

Now that David has chosen the life Vicki is offering him over the death his mother represented, that relationship has nowhere to go. None of the unresolved stories has ever been interesting, and there is no reason to suppose that will change now. So today marks the end, not only of the Laura arc, but of Dark Shadows 1.0. ABC has renewed the show for thirteen more weeks, taking them to episode 260. At this point, there is no indication of what they could possibly do to keep the characters busy for that long.
